Supervision and Evaluation
The thesis must be evaluated by the first examiner and a second examiner. Both must be professors or private lecturers (PD).
Either the first examiner or the second examiner, must be a member of the Faculty of Biology and Preclinical Medicine.
External master's thesis
A master's thesis conducted outside the university must be approved by the examination board of the department. The supervisor of the external thesis must be a professor or private lecturer. A member of the Faculty of Biology and Preclinical Medicine (professor or private lecturer) must be the second examiner.
A master's thesis at Regensburg University Hospital is not external, as it belongs to the university's medical faculty. In this case, the second supervisor must belong to the Faculty of Biology and Preclinical Medicine.
Registration forms can be found on the Biology Examination Office website.
Admission
Admission requires a minimum of 70 credit points, with three practical modules and at least two theoretical modules to be completed. At the start of the master's thesis, one theoretical module and credit points from the Skills Modules may therefore still be missing.
Duration of the master's thesis
The duration of the master's thesis is nine months.
If the processing time needs to be extended for reasons beyond the student's control, an application for extension must be submitted to the Examination Office. Please state in the application why the processing time for the thesis needs to be extended.
Application for extension of the deadline/master's thesis you can find on the website of the Examination Office.
Examination deadlines (Examination Regulations § 22)
The master's program should generally be completed by the end of the fourth semester.
If the remaining requirements for successful completion of the master's examination are not completed by the end of the sixth semester, the master's examination is considered to be failed for the first time. Modules that have not been completed by the end of the deadline and the master's thesis are considered to be failed for the first time. If the outstanding requirements cannot be completed by the end of the eighth semester, the master's examination is considered definitively failed. Modules not yet completed by the end of the deadline and the master's thesis are considered definitively failed.
The application for an extension of the deadline/master's thesis in biology can be found on the website of the Biology Examination Office.
Registration
The master's thesis must be registered with the examination office of the department before work begins.
