Funding Your Studies
How much does it cost to study at the University of Regensburg?
Are there tuition fees at the University of Regensburg?
Tuition fees at the University of Regensburg
The good news first: there are generally no tuition fees or study contributions at the University of Regensburg. Anyone enrolled on a Bachelor's/Master's degree programme or aiming for a State Examination does not pay any fees. (An exception applies to continuing education masters programmes (external link, opens in a new window) (German version only), which are generally subject to a fee).
So as a rule, there are no tuition fees at the University of Regensburg! Of course, students will still have expenses—whether it's for a room in Regensburg, everyday living costs, or study materials. We present four ways in which Student Life can be (partially) financed:
How much is the semester fee?
Studying is not entirely free of charge: students have to pay a semester fee each semester. For the winter semester 2025, this contribution totals 201.00 euros. The amount is made up of 119.00 euros for the semester ticket (external link, opens in a new window) and 82.00 euros basic contribution for the student union (external link, opens in a new window). Students pay the semester fee when they enrol and each semester when they re-register.
What other costs do students incur?
Students have to reckon with costs for rent, daily living expenses, telecommunications providers, the licence fee, etc.
Depending on the degree programme, there may also be costs for technical equipment (laptop, special software) for books, lab coats or travelling expenses for excursions.
How can students save costs?
Many fees or membership fees are cheaper for students, so it is often worth asking. In addition, the University of Regensburg itself also offers low-cost services such as university sports (external link, opens in a new window) (German version only), the cafeterias and canteens (external link, opens in a new window) of the Studierendenwerk, software packages from the Computer Center and the textbook collection of the University Library (external link, opens in a new window).
1. BAf?G
What is BAf?G?
BAf?G (Federal Training Assistance Act) is a state subsidy in Germany that offers students financial assistance for their education. The aim is to promote equal opportunities in the education system. The amount of support depends on the income of the parents and the student's own income. Part of the support is a grant from the state that does not have to be repaid, while the other part is granted as an interest-free loan .
Who can receive BAf?G?
BAf?G is available to students in Germany who need financial support for their education. Requirements are that your parents' income and your own income do not exceed certain limits. In addition, you must not have more than 15,000 euros in assets (45,000 euros from the age of 30). Age and the type of education also play a role in the approval of BAf?G.
When do I have to submit the application?
You should apply for BAf?G as early as possible, ideally a few months before the start of your studies or training programme, as the processing can take time.
Where do I apply for BAf?G?
You can apply for BAf?G at the relevant student services organisation or education funding office. If you are studying in Regensburg, you should apply to the Studierendenwerk Niederbayern/Oberpfalz (external link, opens in a new window).
Who can I contact if I have questions?
The Studierendenwerk Niederbayern/Oberpfalz (external link, opens in a new window) offers comprehensive advice on BAf?G and is responsible for processing applications.

Student loans offer you the opportunity to borrow money for tuition fees and living expenses, which you pay back after your studies. Education funds are another option where investors invest in your education and you pay back a percentage of your income later.
What is a student loan?
Student loans are loans to finance your studies, covering tuition fees and living costs. Repayment is made after graduation, usually with flexible plans and low interest rates.
What do I need to consider?
You should check the interest rates and repayment terms for student loans. Student loans and education funds should therefore be carefully considered and scrutinised.
