Study objective

The aim of the Master's subject is to teach advanced methods of information science, which are required both for subsequent self-employment or employment, e.g., in the media or software industry, as well as for further qualification in academia. The Master's program focuses on the scientific profile of Regensburg information science in the fields of information philosophy, digital humanities, assistance systems, knowledge-based systems and language and text technology. While fundamentally covering central fields of information science, it offers the opportunity to study these areas in depth in a research-oriented manner. The methodological character of information science is emphasized by discussing and demonstrating information science issues and methods in different application contexts.

Study and Examination Regulations

The Examination Regulations for the consecutive Master's degree programme "Information Science" can be found on the corresponding pages of the university.
It is the central, legally binding document in which you will find all important information about the degree programme, e.g:

  • Information on the qualification requirements for admission to the Master's degree programme
  • Information on the repeatability of examinations
  • Information on registering for the Master's thesis
  • Information on the calculation of the overall grade
  • Information on the modules to be completed as part of the degree programme

As a rule, students are subject to the latest version of the Master's examination regulations adopted before commencing the programme.

You can start the Master's degree programme in both the winter and summer semesters. Please note the application deadlines.

Module Overview

The consecutive Master's degree programme in Information Science extends over a total of 4 semesters, during which 8 modules must be successfully completed. The programme concludes with a final thesis (so-called Master's thesis). A total of 120 CP must be successfully completed in the Master's programme, whereby 1 CP corresponds to approx. 25-30 hours of work. The 120 credits are made up of the following achievements:

  • at least 90 CP must be earned by successfully completing the modules provided for in the degree programme.
  • 30 CP are awarded for the successful completion of the Master's thesis.

The credit points (CP) are awarded in the degree programme after successful completion of modules. A module always consists of at least two courses and can usually be completed within 1-2 semesters.

The name of the module always consists of an abbreviation for the degree programme (e.g. "INF" for information science), the abbreviation "M" (for "module") and a number (e.g. 30), such as INF-M30.

Information on which courses must be completed in the individual modules and how many credits are awarded upon successful completion of a module can be found in the module description (opens in a new window). (This PDF is not accessible). These also provide a detailed overview of the programme content and the qualifications aimed for in the degree programme. Before applying for a degree programme, it is therefore essential to consult the module descriptions in order to compare your expectations of the course content with the planned curriculum!

Exemplary course of study

Please note: During the time you are working on your Master's thesis, you must attend the advanced seminar "Recent Developments in Information Science" and present your work at least once. This presentation will be credited to module position INF-M 37.1 with 2 CP.

Please also note: You have a choice and only have to take four of the five modules INF-M 30 to INF-M 34.
