The seminar "Introduction to Academic Writing" is mandatory for all students

  • who study Business Informatics according to PO 2021 and later, and
  • who study Digital Business, or
  • who are writing their B.Sc. thesis at the Chair of Information Systems 3.

The staff of the chair will contact the B.Sc. students and provide information about the course of the seminar.

Contents of the seminar:

The seminar represents a step toward academic independence. In particular, it will

  • present the objectives and methods of academic work,
  • provide guidelines for fundamental approaches,
  • discuss structure, outline, as well as content-related and formal components,
  • explain working with literature,
  • introduce possible information sources and databases,
  • demonstrate tools and applications, e.g. for literature preparation,
  • explain ethical principles for academic work.

The staff of the chair understand themselves as mentors and coaches for the students, closely supporting them in the process of writing their Bachelor’s thesis, discussing the above aspects using the thesis as an example, and providing assistance with questions.

Qualification objectives of the module:

Upon completion of this module, students will have the competence to independently and critically examine and analyze a challenging question in the field of Business Informatics (also in the sense of a thesis proposal) and to purposefully write an academic paper (B.Sc. thesis) based on their findings. In doing so, they can apply the skills in analysis, research, and presentation acquired in the seminar to their advantage.

Recommended semester: 6th semester
