Subjects offered at the UR
Bachelor, Master and State Examination
Bachelor's degree
The Bachelor's degree is the first academic degree with which an academic degree program can be completed, usually after six semesters (= 3 years). It is also a first professionally qualifying degree. A distinction is made between the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and the Bachelor of Science (B. Sc). The B.Sc. specialises in only one subject.
Bachelor's and Master's degree programs are modularised, which means that they consist of study modules. The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) has been introduced in these degree programs.
Master
The Master's degree program is an advanced degree program that usually lasts four semesters. To be accepted onto a Master's degree program, a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent first professionally qualifying degree is one of the requirements.
The following Master's degrees are offered at the UR:
- Master of Arts (M.A.)
- Master of Science (M.Sc.)
- Magister Theologiae (M.T.)
- Magister Legum (LL.M.)
State Examination
A state examination program is standardised nationwide or state-wide (not internationally). The state or a federal state acts as the examiner. The standard period of study is between eight and twelve semesters, depending on the subject.
At the university, the program concludes with the first State Examination.
A State Examination degree is gained in:
- medical degree programs,
- Pharmacy,
- Law and
- the Teacher Training Programs.

Double degree programmes
These are special agreements with partner universities at which students complete individual study sections in order to then receive a degree from all universities participating in the programme. These programmes are generally not English-language courses, so applicants must demonstrate a good knowledge of German (B2/C1) when applying.

Promotion
The aim of the doctoral program is to obtain a doctoral degree. The doctoral program is generally based on individual research work in close collaboration with an academic supervisor. The centrepiece of the doctorate is the dissertation ("doctoral thesis"). After the dissertation has been accepted, a disputation, i.e. an oral examination, takes place. A doctoral program usually takes three to four years.
Anyone interested in doing a doctorate in Regensburg should first endeavour to obtain a confirmation of supervision from a Regensburg professor.
Study programs with an international focus

Programs in English
The majority of degree programs at the UR are offered in German. International students must provide proof of an appropriate German certificate before the start of studies.
The UR is continuously developing new programs in English. Currently, 16 Master's degree programs and one undergraduate degree program are offered in English.
It is recommended that students of English subjects acquire a basic knowledge of German in order to successfully meet the diverse demands of everyday study life.
